Korea's stock market takes the Chuseok holiday off. Bitcoin rose in 7 of the last 12
2026-09-24

Korea's KOSPI and KOSDAQ stock markets are closed for this year's Chuseok holiday, from Thursday, Sept. 24 to Sunday, Sept. 27. Bitcoin trades 24 hours throughout. BITPRESS analyzed Bitcoin prices over the 12 Chuseok holidays from 2014 to 2025: Bitcoin rose 7 times and fell 5.

How we measured: we used Coin Metrics' daily Bitcoin price in U.S. dollars. A holiday is the whole break, including weekends and substitute holidays. We compared the price at 9 a.m. (Korea time) on the first day with the price at 9 a.m. the day after the break ended. For 2025 we used Oct. 3-12: the public holidays (Oct. 3-9) plus one day of leave on Friday, Oct. 10.

  1. Results by year: up in 7 of 12

Bitcoin rose in 2015 (+0.76%), 2016 (+0.47%), 2017 (+14.98%), 2019 (+1.62%), 2022 (+15.77%), 2023 (+4.19%) and 2024 (+1.27%). It fell in 2014 (-0.20%), 2018 (-4.12%), 2020 (-1.62%), 2021 (-7.70%) and 2025 (-4.48%).

Bitcoin rose three years in a row from 2022 to 2024, and fell 4.48% in 2025. In 6 of the 12, the change over the whole break was within 2%.

  1. The biggest one-day moves during the break

On Sept. 9, 2022, Bitcoin rose 10.6% in a day; that year's break gained 15.77%. On Sept. 20, 2021, it fell 9.2% in a day; that year's break lost 7.70%. On Oct. 10, 2025, it fell 6.5% in a day, and the break ended down 4.48%.

In 2021 and 2025, the two big down years, the one-day drop (9.2%, 6.5%) was larger than the drop over the whole break (7.70%, 4.48%).

  1. The 2025 Chuseok break (Oct. 3-12)

Bitcoin started the break at $120,558 at 9 a.m. on Oct. 3 and rose to $124,824 by 9 a.m. on Oct. 7.

On Oct. 10 (U.S. time), President Trump threatened an extra 100% tariff on imports from China. Bitcoin fell 6.5% that day; in Korea it was early Saturday morning, Oct. 11. At 9 a.m. on Oct. 13, the day after the break, the price was $115,153, down 4.48% for the break.

  1. The 2026 Chuseok break (Sept. 24-27): outlook

This year's break started at $84,434 at 9 a.m. on Sept. 24. The result will be the price at 9 a.m. on Sept. 28, the day after the break.

On the record, a small gain is slightly more likely. Bitcoin rose in 7 of the past 12 breaks (58%), and in 6 of 12 the change over the whole break was within 2%. The trend going in was also up: Bitcoin hit an 8-month high of $85,222 on Sept. 21, up more than 30% since Aug. 19. But in some years, as on Oct. 10, 2025, one piece of overseas news knocked it down more than 6% in a day during the break. Past records don't guarantee this year's result.

  1. BITPRESS Insight

Over the 12 Chuseok breaks from 2014 to 2025, Bitcoin rose 7 times, and in 6 the change over the whole break was within 2%.

In the big down years, one day's plunge set the result. The one-day drop on Sept. 20, 2021 (9.2%) was larger than that year's whole-break drop (7.70%), and the one-day drop on Oct. 10, 2025 (6.5%) was larger than the whole-break drop (4.48%). Even while Korean stocks are closed, Bitcoin has moved 6-10% in a single day.
