On Oct. 27, General Motors (GM) announced that it will move its stock listing from the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) to Nasdaq. Its shares trade on the NYSE through the close on Nov. 16 and on Nasdaq from Nov. 17. On the day of the announcement, GM shares closed up 5.54% at $80.54.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GM first listed on the NYSE in 1911. It was delisted after its 2009 bankruptcy and listed on the same exchange again in 2010. The ticker symbol \u201cGM\u201d stays the same, and the company said existing shareholders need to do nothing. So it is easy to see this as a symbolic change of signboard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the point lies elsewhere. The move makes GM eligible to join the Nasdaq-100, an index only Nasdaq-listed companies can enter. If it is added, funds that track the index will have to buy GM shares.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. When a company changes exchanges, what changes for GM shareholders?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    The number of shares a shareholder owns, and the company's earnings and cash, stay the same. The factories and the cars it sells do not change. Only the marketplace where the shares trade changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Think of moving house while keeping all your belongings. But just as the neighborhood you move to decides which schools your child can attend, the exchange a company lists on decides which stock indexes it can join.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. Why does GM have to move to Nasdaq to join the Nasdaq-100?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      The Nasdaq-100 is an index of 100 large companies listed on Nasdaq, not counting financial firms. Nasdaq requires that a company be listed only on Nasdaq to be added. While GM was on the NYSE, it could never be a candidate, no matter how big it was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      GM also wrote in its announcement that \u201cthe Nasdaq listing makes it eligible for the Nasdaq-100 Index.\u201d Eligibility is not a confirmed addition. The index changes each year at its regular reconstitution in December, and there can be special changes in between.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      1. If it joins the index, who has to buy GM shares?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

        A fund that tracks an index exactly does not pick stocks. When a new stock enters the index, it buys that stock in proportion to its weight, and it sells stocks that drop out. A well-known example is QQQ, an ETF that tracks the Nasdaq-100.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        According to Nasdaq, funds and managed money tracking the Nasdaq-100 total $1.4 trillion. Not all of that money goes to GM; each fund buys GM only in proportion to GM's weight in the index. That buying would come not because GM's cars sell well, but because GM was put on the index's list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Think of an agent who goes shopping with a fixed grocery list. Once GM is written on the list, the agent buys it without haggling over the price. But the one who writes on the list is not GM. It is Nasdaq's rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        1. If it joins, which companies will GM be compared with?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

          Today GM is a small slice, at a 1.7% weight, of an ETF that bundles consumer discretionary companies (XLY). In the same ETF, Tesla makes up 19.6% (as of June 30). So when GM rose 5% during the trading day of the announcement, this ETF gained only 0.1%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          If GM joins the Nasdaq-100, it will sit in one basket with tech companies such as Nvidia and Apple. The index also holds non-tech companies such as Costco and PepsiCo, but investors mostly treat it as a tech stock index. GM's chief financial officer, Paul Jacobson, also called Nasdaq a \u201cnatural home,\u201d citing a \u201ccustomer-centric, technology-driven strategy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          1. What happened to Walmart, which moved first?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

            Walmart, the largest U.S. retailer, took the same path first. It left the NYSE, where it had been for more than 50 years, and moved to Nasdaq in December 2025. Then, on Jan. 20, 2026, it took AstraZeneca's place in the Nasdaq-100.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Before the inclusion was announced, the brokerage Jefferies estimated in December 2025 that it could bring in about $19 billion from index-tracking funds. On Jan. 12, the trading day after the inclusion was announced, Walmart shares rose 3.00%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            There is a difference this time. Walmart's January rise came after its inclusion was announced, but GM has only gained eligibility so far. The U.S. financial outlet 24\/7 Wall St. pointed out that the premium now built into GM's share price (the extra rise on hopes of inclusion) comes from eligibility alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

              Moving exchanges does not change a company's value. What changes is whether the stock can get onto the list of money that must buy it. The market also read GM's rise on the announcement day as hope for index inclusion, not as a reaction to earnings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

              Conversely, if hope does not turn into a decision, the premium can fade. Nasdaq, not GM, decides on inclusion, and the next regular reconstitution is in December. An open door is not the same as having walked through it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

              When you read news about a listing move or index inclusion, use one test. Look past company earnings to ask who is now obliged to buy or sell because of it, and whether that decision has already been made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
