On Oct. 21, shares of Samsung Electronics and SK hynix both jumped more than 5%. The KOSPI, Korea's main stock index, had plunged 3.73% the day before; it rose 3.29% to close at 5,735.66. The market also cited rebound buying and steadier oil prices and interest rates, but the trigger it pointed to for chip stocks was numbers from Super Micro Computer, a US company that builds and sells servers and storage systems for AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The easy reading is that US AI stocks went up, so Korean chipmakers followed. But the real point lies elsewhere. What Supermicro put out was not a hopeful forecast but an early estimate, made before closing its books, of sales for three months that had already ended, and AI servers are packed with memory (HBM and DRAM). It was a day when a worry that AI companies might spend less got an answer in the form of a number: this much looks to have been sold already.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. How far did Supermicro raise its figure for a quarter that had already ended?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    On Oct. 20 (US time), Supermicro said that, in a preliminary estimate made before its books were fully closed, it expects revenue of $18.5 billion to $19.5 billion for the quarter that ended Sept. 30. Its August guidance had been $14.5 billion to $15.5 billion. Comparing midpoints, that is a rise from $15 billion to $19 billion: $4 billion, or about 27%, more. The company said the main reason was stronger demand for AI platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Gross margin (the share of revenue left after the cost of the goods) also went up. Think of a shop owner who said this month's sales would come to about $15,000, then looked at the books after the month ended and said it was closer to $19,000. The difference is that the books are not fully settled yet. Official results come on Nov. 3, and the company said the figures could change as it closes its books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. Why do a server maker's sales reveal demand for memory?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      A single AI server holds AI chips along with HBM (high-bandwidth memory, attached right next to the AI chip so data moves fast), large amounts of DRAM and storage. According to an August report, demand for servers fitted with HBM and high-capacity DRAM was so strong that supply of enterprise DRAM (the DRAM that goes into servers and data centers) had become tight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      So the money moves like this: a data center company buys AI servers \u2192 that becomes the server maker's revenue \u2192 the memory inside can be seen as sold too, in the same amount. It is like a moving company that is fully booked in moving season: you can assume boxes and tape are selling just as fast. But just as which store sold the boxes is a separate question, the release does not say which companies supplied the memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Samsung Electronics and SK hynix are memory makers that Nomura, the global brokerage, has named as top picks. Nomura expects memory demand to outstrip supply at least through 2028, and as its basis it points to new data center capacity worldwide growing 41%, from 22.3 gigawatts this year to 31.5 gigawatts next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      1. Why did this one number move the stocks by more than 5%?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

        What had weighed on the market in the days before was worry about AI investment. The KOSPI plunged 7.57% on Oct. 15, triggering a circuit breaker (a mechanism that briefly halts trading when stocks crash), and fell another 3.73% on Oct. 20. The Oct. 20 drop was blamed on a sharp fall in the bonds of CoreWeave, a US company that rents out AI data centers, and on the chance that big tech companies would cut spending. When bond prices fall, data center companies find it harder to borrow, which feeds the worry that their equipment spending could shrink.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        That worry is a forecast that companies may spend less in the future. Supermicro's number, by contrast, is an estimate made before the books close, but it covers a period already over: more servers than expected were sold in the three months through September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        The release came after the US market closed on Oct. 20, and in after-hours trading Supermicro shares jumped more than 14%, while other server makers such as Dell and HPE rose 3.5% to 4.9%. Korea's market on Oct. 21 moved on that reaction. Dell and HPE also followed with gains in the US session on Oct. 21, which opened after Korea's market had closed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        1. Where did foreign money go back to?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

          On Oct. 21, the day after the KOSPI fell 3.73% on Oct. 20, foreign investors bought heavily into Samsung Electronics and SK hynix. There was more than one reason, but the market named Supermicro's number as one of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          The numbers on Korea's side pointed the same way. Korea's chip exports for Oct. 1 to 20 were $27.52 billion, up 222.5% from the same period last year, driving the rise in total exports. In effect, a number showing more AI servers sold in the US and a number showing more chips shipped from Korea pointed in the same direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

          1. One day's rebound did not end the worry<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

            The rebound had more than one cause. Rebound buying by investors looking for bargains after the plunge, lower oil prices and steadier long-term US Treasury yields all helped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

            Even Nomura, upbeat on memory demand, added a caveat: if data center investment plans keep shrinking, or even funded projects are badly delayed, the memory demand outlook will need another look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

              Worry about an AI bubble usually comes from what AI companies will spend in the future. But memory makers' revenue is set, in the end, by how many servers with memory inside are actually built and sold. When foreign investors bought Samsung Electronics and SK hynix again on Oct. 21, it was not only a vague bet on AI; the estimate that those finished servers sold better than expected through September was one of the reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

              So when you look at chip stocks, it is worth checking not only Nvidia's share price but also the sales of companies that assemble and sell servers. More than news that AI investment plans have shrunk, whether servers with memory inside have actually started to sell less is the more direct signal for chip stocks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
