Who absorbs the KRW 14 trillion of selling?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Samsung Electronics' buyback of KRW 15 trillion worth of treasury shares (its own shares that a company buys), 2 million shares a day since Aug. 24 (1.8 million on the first day), is due to end on Oct. 6. Through Oct. 2 it had spent KRW 14.7077 trillion, leaving about KRW 300 billion. That is 46 days ahead of the Nov. 21 end date in its filing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The common reading is that if third-quarter results, due on Oct. 8, are strong, the stock will hold up. But the real issue is not earnings. It is who keeps buying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From Aug. 24 to Oct. 1, foreign and retail investors together net sold (sold minus bought) KRW 14.639 trillion of Samsung Electronics shares. Over the same period the company bought back KRW 14.1565 trillion of its own shares, about 97% of that selling (BITPRESS calculation; trades by institutions and other investors are left out).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>How fast did Samsung buy?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The buyback period set by the board on Aug. 21 ran 61 trading days, to Nov. 21. Spread evenly, that would have been about 870,000 shares, or about KRW 250 billion, a day. In practice it bought 2 million shares, roughly KRW 500 billion, every day. That is twice the pace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Think of spending a month's grocery budget in two weeks. The difference is that a grocery budget is topped up next month, while this buyback ends once the KRW 15 trillion cap is used up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By Oct. 2 it had bought 55.8 million shares, 104.72% of the planned number. It buys by amount, and because the share price was below the KRW 281,500 reference price, the same money bought more shares. The remaining KRW 300 billion or so is less than one day of buying (2 million shares at around KRW 270,000, about KRW 500 billion), so it is due to end in a single day on Oct. 6.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"2\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Who took the shares that foreigners and individuals sold?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Korea Exchange data show that over the same period foreigners net sold KRW 7.6141 trillion and retail investors KRW 7.0249 trillion. The company's KRW 14.1565 trillion of buying took most of those shares.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The share price looks different depending on the starting point. The Oct. 1 close of KRW 276,000 was about 7.4% above KRW 257,000 on Aug. 24, when the stock plunged 8.70%, but about 2% below the KRW 281,500 close on Aug. 21, just before the buyback began.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was like having a regular customer who places an order for 2 million shares every day. But this customer stops coming once the set money is spent. Analysts also said the buyback did less to lift the price than to put a floor under it by taking the shares others sold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"3\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Why isn't this KRW 15 trillion for shareholders?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The purpose Samsung disclosed for the buyback is employee stock compensation. It bought the shares for performance incentives tied to 2026 results and similar pay, and the actual amounts and timing have not been set.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Think of a pizza cut into eight slices. If the company buys two slices and throws them away (retires them), each of the six left is a bigger share. If it hands them to employees, the number of slices stays the same, and the employees who get them can sell them again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The reaction on announcement day was lukewarm. On Aug. 21 Samsung unveiled up to KRW 110 trillion in shareholder returns, but left KRW 60-80 trillion of it to be decided next January, and the stock slipped to the KRW 270,000 range in after-hours trading. That contrasts with SK hynix, which said it would buy back KRW 40 trillion of its shares and retire them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"4\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Who fills the KRW 500 billion daily gap?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the buyback ends on Oct. 6, the steady buying of around KRW 500 billion every trading day disappears. That is as if 50,000 individuals, each buying KRW 10 million, stopped buying every day (hypothetical calculation). Across the KOSPI, foreigners net bought KRW 243 billion on Oct. 1 and then net sold KRW 190 billion on Oct. 2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"5\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Will strong earnings solve it?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What analysts are counting on is the Oct. 8 earnings release. The third-quarter operating profit (profit from the core business) forecast compiled by NH Investment &amp; Securities is about KRW 109.5 trillion, about KRW 3.6 trillion below its early-September peak, while the fourth-quarter forecast is in the KRW 120.8 trillion range. Some expect foreigners to return if the results confirm the chip cycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a counterargument. A Samsung Securities analyst said the end of the buyback is \"already known,\" and investors worried about it are likely to sell before it ends. The analysis is that once worries about profits ease, the stock could even stabilize after the buyback ends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"6\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>BITPRESS Insight<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 55.8 million shares the company bought by Oct. 2 do not disappear. Because they are for employee pay, once handed out they remain shares that can be sold again. The orders that took the selling are ending, and the shares they took can come back to the market someday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So for Samsung Electronics shareholders, the key question after Oct. 6 is not just the earnings number. It is whether foreigners or institutions take the selling in the company's place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here is the rule of thumb. A price that held up while a company was buying back shares includes support from the company's own orders.
