Many investors think gold rises first when war breaks out. But real markets don't always move that way. On March 3, 2026, as the shock of the Iran war grew, global markets saw stocks, bonds and even gold sold off together. Reuters summed up the day as \u201cCash became king.\u201d Brent crude jumped about 7%, the dollar strengthened, and $47.9 billion flowed into global money market funds. Even so, if you see this rally purely as a rebound in risk assets, you miss one important scene: crypto movements inside Iran. According to Reuters on March 3, outflows from Iranian crypto exchanges surged right after the U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran began. Chainalysis estimated that $10.3 million worth of crypto left Iranian exchanges from Saturday through Monday, and outflows topped $2 million in the hour right after the strikes. Another analytics firm, Elliptic, found that hourly outflows from Nobitex, Iran's largest exchange, jumped to about eight times the previous day's level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What these numbers say is clear. As war and instability grew, some people actually tried to move money out through crypto. Gold bars are hard to carry across borders, cash carries high risks of tracking and control, and the banking system can be blocked by sanctions and restrictions. In such conditions, digital assets like Bitcoin and stablecoins can work not as \u201cinvestment products\u201d but as \u201cportable stores of value.\u201d This function grows even stronger in countries facing sanctions and currency instability. Reuters also reported in February that Iran's annual crypto activity is estimated at roughly $8 billion to $10 billion, driven by sanctions and the weak rial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This is where you need to be most careful. Even the analytics firms Reuters cited said they could not say for sure whose money this outflow was or why it moved. Some of it may be ordinary Iranian citizens moving funds, but some could be exchanges reallocating liquidity, and some could be moves by state-linked actors.
