Comparing Korea\u2019s top 5 crypto exchanges"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why \u2018big exchanges\u2019 decide who survives a crisis<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most dangerous risk in crypto investing is not simply a price crash, but \u201ca situation where it looks like you can sell, yet your order does not actually get filled.\u201d<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tokenpost.kr\/research\/468\"><\/a><br>This risk is not about individual coins; it is determined by an exchange\u2019s whole structure:&nbsp;<strong>liquidity<\/strong>(trading volume and order book depth),&nbsp;<strong>system stability<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>and the financial strength of its major shareholder<\/strong>&nbsp;.<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/coinmarketcap.com\/ko\/rankings\/exchanges\/\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>When 24-hour trading volume is large enough, bid-ask gaps widen less even in a crash, and the risk of slippage (the gap between the price you want and the price you actually get) goes down.<a href=\"https:\/\/research.kaiko.com\/korean_market_korean\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The more monthly active users (MAU) an exchange has, the more densely buy and sell orders stack up, raising the odds that \u201csomeone is there to take the other side when I dump.\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tokenpost.kr\/research\/468\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The more stable the governance and the deeper the pockets of the major shareholder, the better the chances of keeping systems running, paying compensation and staying in operation when a hack, a mass withdrawal or a regulatory issue hits.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.seoul.co.kr\/news\/economy\/IT\/2017\/09\/26\/20170926500176\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Below, based on the size and governance of Korea\u2019s \u2018top 5 won-based exchanges\u2019 (Upbit, Bithumb, Coinone, Korbit and GOPAX) as of early 2026, we look at whether you can \u201creally sell\u201d in a crisis.<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/econalk.com\/kr\/articles\/2026-01-23-2026-\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"1\">1. Upbit: No. 1, combining trading volume, users and Naver\u2019s financial capital<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Upbit still has the largest trading volume among Korea\u2019s won-based exchanges and remains a major exchange ranked near the top globally as well.<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newsspace.kr\/news\/article.html?no=12279\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>24-hour trading value: As of late January 2026, crypto data providers show it ranking No. 1 in Korea with trading value in the billions of dollars (trillions of won).<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsspace.kr\/news\/article.html?no=12279\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Market share: By domestic spot trading volume, Upbit and Bithumb together account for more than 90% of the total, with Upbit estimated to hold more than half.<a href=\"https:\/\/research.kaiko.com\/korean_market_korean\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Accounts and users: Cumulative accounts are estimated in the millions, and outside reports say Upbit accounts make up the overwhelming majority of all domestic accounts (more than 16 million).<a href=\"https:\/\/www.joongang.co.kr\/article\/25337441\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The biggest change in governance is its move into Naver\u2019s financial group.<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hankyung.com\/article\/2025112675761\"><\/a>\u200b\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In November 2025, Naver Financial\u2019s board approved a share swap to make Dunamu (Upbit\u2019s operator) a wholly owned subsidiary, with an exchange ratio of \u201c1 Dunamu share : 2.54 Naver Financial shares.\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hankyung.com\/article\/2025112675761\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a>\u200b<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The deal still needs review by the Fair Trade Commission and financial regulators, but if completed, Upbit will sit under a Big Tech financial platform combined with Naver\u2019s finance and payments ecosystem.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hankyung.com\/article\/2025112675761\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a>\u200b\u200b<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In short, Upbit combines<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the capacity to fill orders, backed by\u00a0<strong>overwhelming trading volume<\/strong>,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>, a deep\u00a0<strong>pool of active traders<\/strong>,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and, through Naver Financial,\u00a0<strong>large-scale tech and financial capital<\/strong><br>so in a crisis its \u201cchances of filling orders\u201d and \u201cability to keep systems running and handle withdrawals\u201d are relatively high.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsspace.kr\/news\/article.html?no=12279\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a>\u200b<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Bithumb: top-tier volume, but its governance history is a risk factor<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bithumb is Korea\u2019s No. 2 spot exchange and still ranks near the top of global exchange rankings.<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/coinmarketcap.com\/ko\/rankings\/exchanges\/\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>24-hour trading value: It swings between hundreds of millions and billions of dollars. Smaller than Upbit, but clearly an exchange with \u2018large liquidity\u2019 in Korea.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.btcc.com\/ko-KR\/academy\/research-analysis\/the-differences-between-upbit-and-bithumb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Market share: One of the two giants that, together with Upbit, account for around 90% of Korea\u2019s spot market volume, with an estimated share of around 30% at times.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.btcc.com\/ko-KR\/academy\/research-analysis\/the-differences-between-upbit-and-bithumb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Estimated accounts: Cumulative accounts are said to be in the millions, but the exchange does not disclose them, so the \u2018exact current number of users\u2019 cannot be confirmed (insufficient information).<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tokenpost.kr\/research\/468\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a>\u200b<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That said, Bithumb has a history of recurring governance issues, with changes in its major shareholder and takeover attempts mentioned several times over the years.<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tokenpost.kr\/research\/468\"><\/a>\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Negotiations over a change of major shareholder and sale rumors have surfaced frequently, but the latest finalized and disclosed ownership structure is only partly public (details such as stake percentages and acquisition prices are insufficient).<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tokenpost.kr\/research\/468\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a>\u200b<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This history does not in itself mean \u2018operational instability\u2019 now, but it could become a variable in decision-making speed and capacity to inject additional capital when new regulations or market shocks hit.<a href=\"https:\/\/research.kaiko.com\/korean_market_korean\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On liquidity alone, Bithumb still falls into the \u201ceasy to sell on\u201d category, but it is an exchange where governance risk should be checked separately from a medium- to long-term perspective.<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/coinmarketcap.com\/ko\/rankings\/exchanges\/\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Coinone: mid-level liquidity and \u2018relatively quiet\u2019 governance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Coinone is smaller than Upbit and Bithumb, but it is a won-based exchange with liquidity in Korea\u2019s top three.<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/econalk.com\/kr\/articles\/2026-01-23-2026-\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>24-hour trading value: It sits mid-table in global rankings, with major data sites showing trading volume in the range of tens of millions to hundreds of millions of dollars.<a href=\"https:\/\/econalk.com\/kr\/articles\/2026-01-23-2026-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Market share: Kaiko Research explains that among Korea\u2019s top five exchanges, Upbit and Bithumb account for more than 90% of total volume, while Coinone, Korbit and GOPAX split \u201cthe remaining 10% or less.\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/research.kaiko.com\/korean_market_korean\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a>\u200b<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is relatively little public information on its governance and investment history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It has grown around its founder and CEO Cha Myung-hoon. There are reports that it attracted outside investment, but official public data showing specific stakes and investment amounts are limited (insufficient information).<a href=\"https:\/\/econalk.com\/kr\/articles\/2026-01-23-2026-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In terms of liquidity, it is reasonable to see Coinone as \u201cmid-tier: orders may fill more slowly than on the big exchanges, but with lower risk than small ones.\u201d<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/coinmarketcap.com\/ko\/rankings\/exchanges\/\"><\/a><br>Especially if you trade mainly major coins rather than small altcoins, the real-world risk of orders not filling is largely reduced.<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/coinmarketcap.com\/ko\/rankings\/exchanges\/\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Korbit: Nexon affiliate + small-to-mid liquidity, takeover talks still in progress<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Korbit is one of Korea\u2019s first-generation exchanges, and so far its stake is held by NXC, Nexon\u2019s holding company.<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.seoul.co.kr\/news\/economy\/IT\/2017\/09\/26\/20170926500176\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>According to a regulatory filing, in 2017 NXC acquired about 125,000 Korbit shares for KRW 91.25 billion, securing a 65.19% stake.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chosun.com\/site\/data\/html_dir\/2017\/09\/26\/2017092602739.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Filings and reports later showed that Korbit\u2019s book value had fallen sharply, and one analysis says that by 2020 NXC had written down more than 90% of the value of its stake relative to the purchase price.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aseanexpress.co.kr\/news\/article.html?no=4031\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a>\u200b<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since late 2025, several media outlets have reported \u201ctakeover talks with a Mirae Asset affiliate,\u201d but as of February 2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>no regulatory approval or official filing has confirmed that the deal has closed (insufficient information on its progress).<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aseanexpress.co.kr\/news\/article.html?no=4031\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a>\u200b<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In terms of liquidity, it ranks near the bottom of the top five.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Korbit often ranks around 50th to 100th globally, and its 24-hour trading volume is far lower than Upbit, Bithumb or Coinone.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsspace.kr\/news\/article.html?no=12279\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In conclusion, it is realistic to see Korbit as<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>having \u201cbig-company capital from Nexon\u2019s holding company,\u201d but<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>with \u201csmall actual trading volume and user base, and takeover talks reported but not yet completed\u201d:<br>a mixed structure.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.seoul.co.kr\/news\/economy\/IT\/2017\/09\/26\/20170926500176\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"5\">5. GOPAX: Binance is the largest shareholder, but liquidity is \u2018the lowest of the five\u2019<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">GOPAX has the smallest trading volume and user base of the five won-based exchanges.<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/econalk.com\/kr\/articles\/2026-01-23-2026-\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In February 2023, Binance acquired more than 67% of Streami, GOPAX\u2019s operator, becoming its major shareholder, and then filed a report of executive changes with the Korea Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU).<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mk.co.kr\/news\/stock\/11442849\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In October 2025, the FIU accepted that executive change report, legally settling Binance\u2019s status as major shareholder, and GOPAX became an exchange with \u201cBinance as major shareholder + an accepted domestic registration.\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bizhankook.com\/bk\/article\/30528\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But its liquidity is still small.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>On global data sites, GOPAX\u2019s 24-hour trading volume is in the range of a few million to tens of millions of dollars, near the bottom of the top five.<a href=\"https:\/\/econalk.com\/kr\/articles\/2026-01-23-2026-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>At this scale, trying to unload a sizable position all at once during a volatile market or a crash in a single coin can cause heavy slippage.<a href=\"https:\/\/research.kaiko.com\/korean_market_korean\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In short, GOPAX\u2019s&nbsp;<strong>shareholder capital (Binance)<\/strong>&nbsp;is a plus, but&nbsp;<strong>on domestic won-market liquidity<\/strong>alone, it is closer to \u201clast place.\u201d<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yna.co.kr\/view\/AKR20251016070951002\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"2026---5\">Key comparison of Korea\u2019s top 5 exchanges as of 2026<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None of the figures are \u201cexact absolute values\u201d; they are summarized only as&nbsp;<strong>approximate levels and rankings<\/strong>that can be cross-checked against outside data, reports and media as of early 2026.<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"
